Persistence in Job Search – Quinyue’s Inspiring Patience on Google

Job search is competitive, many CV curators run by bots, a data mine, a scammers paradise, often rigged or bias, charisma can be selected over qualifications, can come down to who you know, and the end results are very much out of your control which underlines the crucial need for patience in job seeking.

It is however a numbers game and unfortunately you have to keep applying until somehow, someone says yes and maybe you get paid 30% lower than you’re worth and you accept it because of desperation to work and to earn.

Job hunting is a full time job. Review your competition and become a contender. Don’t be afraid to apply to a role you think you aren’t qualified for too. Often times the description is scarier than the job is.

The most important thing to remember is not to put yourself down with each rejection. It’s really just a game of chance and ya gotta keep rolling the dice.

Persistence in Job Search
Qingyue (Annie) Wang

I failed to get into Google 5 times.

The 1st time was in 2018. I received an online assessment from Google. I was excited, but I didn’t pass the OA.

Afterwards, an interviewer reached out to me. They had reviewed my OA answers and wanted to give me a second chance. Unfortunately, I didn’t pass on this attempt either.

My 3rd attempt was in early 2020. I had a phone screening interview, which I didn’t pass.

Persisting, I applied again in 2020 for a Site Reliability Engineer role. After four rounds of interviews and receiving positive feedback, the role was unfortunately canceled due to the pandemic.

In 2022, on my 5th attempt, I finally secured a Software Engineer role. After passing the interview, I received a gift from Google along with a paper that said, “Congratulations, searching for a job is hard…”

The Mindset of Patience and Persistence in Job Search

In a conversation with Annie, she said, ‘I’ve kept this paper for 2 years now as it continually reminds me of the importance of persistence and not giving up’.
