5 Important Mentality LinkedIn Tips You Ought to Know

1. “Influencers” are fallible. If you choose to put them on a pedestal, it’s your responsibility if they fall.

2. It is the most self-serving social media platform that exists.

3. Posting your CV/Resume won’t get you a job.

4. If you think certain people owe you a Profile or Resume review, you are wrong. Why? Because we have day jobs, lives, family, and need to sleep.

5. That posting free advice is a thankless task when people can’t even be bothered to press the “like” tab.

So what’s the solution? Give up the myth of LinkedIn. Control your future by investing in it yourself and hold nobody accountable for your life. But YOU.

8 Ways to Achieve an ALL-STAR Profile on LinkedIn

1. Complete ALL Profile fields.

2. Profiles with photos get at least twice as many views as those without.

3. Dates are mandatory in the profile fields. Do not put a silly date like 1910 to make it look like an error. Rather be considered “old” than incompetent.

4. If you didn’t attend University just put the name of your last school.

5. Reflect on the headlines of your current position or job titles that you want.

6. You can add ONO (open to new opportunities) at the end of your headline.

7. You have 2000 characters to write a mini-synopsis of “who” you are as a person, key CV/Resume highlights, and hard skill, transferable skill, tech skill bullet points.

8. You can attach media to add project details, case details, awards, etc.

It is essential that the chronological details in your profile match your CV/Resume. Many recruiters and hiring managers tell me that discrepancies between the two are a good reason not to invite a person to interview. Your LinkedIn Profile is your new business card.

Make it an ALL-STAR one!

How to Utilize LinkedIn Profile Visibility

1. Edit Profile Heading

2. Like people’s posts.

3. Comment meaningfully on posts.

4. Like your comments.

5. Like the comments of others.

Whether you are job hunting, promoting your business, promoting a brand, promoting yourself, or socializing professionally, the only way to achieve these things is to PARTICIPATE.

Like/comment on posts; like the comments of others; write posts.

The graph below shows the change in profile views in  24 hours (July 21/22) after the above practice by a user

Want to Know When VISIBILITY on LinkedIn Becomes an Issue?

In these instances...

1. If you are C-Suite, Board Level, Legal, Law Enforcement, Military, or have high-level Security Clearance.
Choose your activity with care.

2. If you are currently employed and looking to change employer, approach job seeker posts with care.

3. If you are a job seeker and want visibility with recruiters and HR, choose your commentary and
vocabulary with care.

LinkedIn is a great platform for a multitude of reasons. MILLIONS of people are actively viewing or participating at any given time. Engage politely, insightfully, and respectfully at all times.

Want to Know How to Approach RECRUITERS on LinkedIn?

Like this…

1. Use the main search bar to type your field + ‘recruiter,’ relevant region, followed by the ‘in People’ option, e.g, IT Recruiter

2. Send a personalized connection request, short, polite, and to the point. NOT “Hey, I need a job.”

3. Once the connection request is accepted, send a cover direct message no longer than 250 words, and attach your resume. You can also request an email address and send a cover email (400-word max.) with an attached resume.

4. Ask at any of the first three steps whether you can hop on a call at the recruiter’s convenience.

5. Bear in mind that recruiters get inundated with connection requests and DMs. Accept that it may take time to get a response, if at all.

The best way to approach a recruiter is by HIGHLIGHTING yourself in the best possible way.

Before approaching recruiters, make sure that your LinkedIn Profile is immaculate and optimized.
The same applies to your Resume.

If you want to get noticed in life, make sure your first impression is a memorable one…..

Want to Use LINKEDIN JOBS More Effectively?

Do this….

1. Don’t just focus on job titles. Read the job descriptions and requirements. Many job titles are embellished today.

2. On any specific job posting, scroll down without opening the JD to see if the Job Poster has been profiled. Reach out and try to send your resume via email rather than online upload.

3. Continue scrolling down to find out if you have any connections highlighted at the company in question. Reach out to them. See if you can get the name and email of the actual hiring manager, and/or politely ask for a referral.

4. Make sure you enable Email Alerts for the jobs/companies you search. You will receive instant notifications when new jobs are posted.

On LinkedIn, you have the opportunity to be a mere three degrees of separation away from your potential employer assuming YOU are doing your utmost to improve your visibility and increase your network.

It’s far less about “what” you know and far more about “who” you know in this day and age of global hiring. Make sure you are not missing out by simply sitting on the sidelines and observing.
You need to ENGAGE.

So if you want to get hired, get PROACTIVE!

Want to Know Why You Aren’t Getting Anything Out of LINKEDIN?

It’s simply because you aren’t putting anything into LinkedIn.

Once you engage by liking and commenting meaningfully on insightful posts, you tell the algorithm that you are an active user.

The more active you are, the more profile views you will receive and the more “visible” you will become.

How do you comment?

You comment politely, thoughtfully, and in a full sentence or more. “True,” “Great post,” “Interested,” will not get you far. Be discerning about what you engage in, and the way in which you engage. Don’t be a sheep. Have a mind of your own!

This saying goes for everyone, but especially if you are a jobseeker: Be careful what you say. Some posts get hundreds of thousands, if not millions of views. One of those views could be a potential employer! In life, you can’t expect to reap what you haven’t sown.

Want to Know How to POST Successfully on LinkedIn?

Here’s how:

1. Pick a topic.

2. Write clearly and succinctly.

3. Space text for easy reading.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

4. Ask a proper question at the end of your post to garner commentary.

5. Add relevant hashtags (not too many).

6. Add @tags of people whom you know will engage with likes and comments.

7. If posting videos, add subtitles.

8. If posting external links, put the link in the first comment, not the main post (algorithm).

9. Do not post profanity, hate speech, etc.

10.Put a like on your posts, as soon as it sends it (algorithm).

11.Respond to all comments for the first hour (algorithm).

12.Put likes on all re-shares of your post (courtesy).

13.”Check-in” on the post every 2 hours to like and reply to comments (algorithm).

14. Do not post within 2 hours of a post (algorithm).

The first 60 minutes of a post are vital, so don’t post and leave! Content does best when it less about the author and more about the audience. Nobody is as interested in you, as you are!

I am going to repeat what I told people to do to gain greater profile visibility.

1. Put a like on a post. 2. Comment meaningfully on a post. 3. Put a like on your own comment. 4. Put likes on the comments of others. 5. Respond to the comments of others.

If you do all of the above 5 over a period of a day or two, you will see profile view increases of 500-1000%+ very quickly. Visibility attracts connections and followers, who in turn generate more networking opportunities for you.

What is LINKEDIN to you?

Various people find it to be many things, Among them are:

1. A place to network

2. A place to learn

3. A place to feel less alone

4. A place to inspire and be inspired

5. A full time job

Engage for whichever reason appeals to you. Like any social media platform, your activity will be reviewed by potential employers. So keep it clean. There are some amazing people on LinkedIn.  Follow them too.

Why are YOU on LinkedIn?

Don’t forget to:
Put a like on posts.
Comment meaningfully.
Put a like on your own comment.
Put a like on the comments of others.
Connect/follow people who inspire you.

You reap what you sow in Life. So start SOWING!

– 4 reasons to sharpen your LinkedIn HEADLINE:

1. It identifies you in professional terms.

2. It states your current role(s) or roles that you are seeking.

3. It is helpful to recruiters, and hiring managers.

4. If you add #ONO at the end, it informs people that you are “open to new opportunities.”

In short, think of it as your business card!

– 4 tips for SHARING posts on LinkedIn:

1. Use the “share” option.

2. Write a couple of lines of your own text above the shared post.

3. Add a couple of relevant # hashtags.

4. Put a like on your own shared post (this makes Mr. Algorithm very happy)

Sharing a post into your network is a huge compliment to the original author of the post.

BUT:

Add your own “signature” to it by adding a couple of lines of introduction, explanation, or your personal opinion, to customize it for your own network and following.

Put a like and reply to comments on your re-share.

Sharing posts is a good way to build up to eventually writing posts of your own, and it enhances your visibility on this platform.

Remember: what you share into your own network is a reflection, first and foremost, of YOU. So be discerning!

3 ways to get closer to HIRING MANAGERS on LinkedIn:

1. By connection.
2. By connection referral.
3. By introduction.

The more directly you can route your CV/Resume to a hiring manager, the better your chances of getting a job. If you need a referral/introduction from somebody be very SPECIFIC. that is, Company name, location, dept, and/or person are ESSENTIAL.

Random “Please refer me to your connections” will go unanswered. In Life it’s not just a question of who YOU know; it’s a question of who others know too!

The best ways to get somebody’s attention on your own post are:

1. @ tag their name
2. DM them the link to the post

Many people get hundreds of notifications each day. It can be physically impossible to keep up. Same with DMs.

Connections vs. Followers on LinkedIn:

1. LinkedIn allows a maximum of 30,000 1st connections per account.

2. In order to send a DM to somebody, you either need to be a 1st connection to that person, or subscribe to LinkedIn Premium, which gives free InMail.

3. Once you reach the limit of 30,000 1st connections, you cannot accept or send connection invitations. People can then only follow you.

4. Please don’t ask people for their email addresses in the comments on posts, as thousands of people then may have access to those very personal contact details.

I wish the system were otherwise. It isn’t.

I always suggest that anyone trying to reach me directly, try to find a common ‘Friend.’ Somebody who is a 1st connection of mine who can pass on the message.

I DO recommend LinkedIn Premium for jobseekers who can afford it. It gives you a separate app for LinkedIn jobs and LinkedIn learning.
It gives you recruiter statistics and other enhanced features.
You can pay monthly and cancel at any time.

Veterans: please be advised that LinkedIn very generously offers 1 year of free Premium to transitioning vets.
Thank you for your service.

10 ways to optimize your LinkedIn Profile for greater VISIBILITY:

1. Highlight your professional skills.
2. Link to your publications.
3. Promote your projects.
4. Showcase specialty certifications.
5. Add awards.
6. Support your causes.
7. Highlight your interests.
8. Emphasize your languages.
9. Showcase professional affiliations.
10. Highlight your LinkedIn Groups.

All of the above LinkedIn tips can be done via the functionality of the Profile. Once LinkedIn considers a Profile to be 100% complete, you will be given their All-Star status. If you are currently unemployed, there is no excuse not to spend the few extra minutes needed, to optimize your Profile. Nobody can do it, except YOU!
