The 54 years old hails from Sokoto State, where he obtained majority of his education. In 1983, he graduated from the Federal Government College in Sokoto with an award as the best in Technical Drawing. He also earned a degree in Archicteture from Birnin Kebbi Polytechnic in Kebbi, where he graduated as the overall best student. Filled with the desire for greatness, he proceeded in 1990 to study Transportation Design at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan through the scholarship provision of the Sokoto State government.

After graduation in 1994, Jelani Aliyu as talent will always standout, he was noticed by General Motors, the multinational corporation that designs and market vehicles. Starting his career as a design staff, he contributed immensely towards the growth and development of the company. It was there he formulated the Buick Rendezvous, he was also the lead designer of the Pontiac G6, he was also instrumental in the design of the Astra. In 2014, his invention ‘the Chevrolet Volt was given an award by the United States Environmental Protection Agency for the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the market.

Interestingly, Jelani Aliyu today is the director general of the Nigerian Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), the parastatal in the Ministry of Industries, with responsibility to implement developmental policies for the country’s auto industry that is still at its embryonic state. He as a director has formulated policies that are certain to bring the desired change to the country’s automobile industry.

According to him, a Nigerian vehicle that is conceptualized, designed and developed by Nigerians for Nigerians in Nigeria. A vehicle designed specifically for the Nigerian populace, in tune with the history, culture, environment and economic structure of the people. In all, Jelani Aliyu can be said to be one of Africa’s best exports to the world and a concrete proof that something good can come out of Africa.
