Characteristics of a Good Leader and  Utilizing the One You Have

Leadership is giving others opportunities to excel, grow, and make a difference. Each of us are leaders and must not lower ourselves to the environment we work within. We each can hold ourselves to a leadership standard, and in doing so, help an organization make a shift in how it cares for and leads its people.

One person, one at a time can make a difference. Leadership is not about the head alone. If the people under are improving too, happy at work, and making great things happen, the impact meted on them says a lot about their leader.

Discussing the characteristics of a good leader

Unfortunately, in various human experiences, there are too few “good”  leaders/supervisors/managers/etc. In fact, as with many current world/business/trade leaders, it is befuddling and beguiling that they could achieve their positions of leadership, considering that they are bad/poor/ineffective at what they do, and most importantly, how they treat others.

What are the qualities of good leader?

  • Honesty and Integrity
  • Inspire Others
  • Commitment and Passion.
  • Good Communicator
  • Decision-Making Capabilities
  • Accountability
  • Delegation and Empowerment
  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Having empathy
  • Being a good listener
  • Charismatic
  • Being authentic
  • Available and approachable

Leadership is first experienced. Giving others opportunities to develop themselves fully. Leadership roles gives them the choice to accept accountability and responsibility. A great leader understands how to effectively win the respect of his employees.

Doing it for Yourself Versus Doing it for Others Approval

Leadership skills and competencies include empathy, communication, teamwork, community involvement, innovation, and many more. One of the most important skills of a leader is the ability to communicate effectively, besides awareness, honesty, and integrity.

Honesty is also referred to as positivity. The ability to develop trust in followers and legitimacy is based on honesty. They lead the way.

They produce a vision of upcoming missions, inspire people, help others, and encourage their team members. This demands truthfulness. Good leaders are the central pillar of our development.

“Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion.” — Jack Welch

An effective leader knows how to show others what is required to let them grow by giving them challenging opportunities and guiding them. “Potential” and “real efforts” are keys to success.. These are the characteristics of a good leader. A ”good leadership” also means paving the way for others to become leaders.

This is unique leadership. It’s unfortunate that it is rare. Leaders’ days are built around so many meetings that even with good intentions they aren’t able to dedicate real time to supporting their teams. However, in today’s scenario, managers (not leaders) always focus on getting the work done than developing a resource according to their strength.

In knowing the characteristics of a good leader, How do you harness it ?

Most importantly, we all need to take responsibility for learning new skills and developing our own potential. Most leaders today see your potential and are confused by it.

Remember a quote from Eric Thomas about potential – “You cannot afford to live in potential for the rest of your life”. At some point, you have to unleash the potential and make your move. While the leader sees your potential, it is also important for us to release that potential into action.

Find Out the Many Reasons to Change Your Mind When Necessary

True leadership is all about getting the best out of the people and creating more differentiated leaders, and not about having multiple followers as many people think. See it as “two-way” road, which means for leader to develop your potential, you have to be ready to accept such efforts to develop you.

You have to accept that you are not perfect. A leader can see potential that you may not even see within yourself. A good leader will see that potential and help you develop it until you believe in yourself.

Most leaders strive hard to get into a position of authority and then crumble at taking on the responsibility to lead. Nevertheless, we must also do our part to demonstrate that we are worth investing in. Most good leaders have limited time, resources and energy, so will selectively choose who and how to invest time and effort. Until you work with a bad leader, you will never know what it means to have a good leader.

Characteristics of a Good Leader and Ways to Utilize the One You Have

The breed of good leaders are very rare. When you get one, value and harness your potentials through the luck you effortlessly have. It is another way to be blessed by God.

A good leader will also assign duties to you that show your inner strength and competency. That’s delegation of duty. A bad leader would never give you that opportunity. A great leader is your colleague that extends a helping hand to you at all times.
